The Grogu Dilemma
Enter Grogu, a cine actor known for his versatile roles in cinema. In the 90's, when he started out, he was adored as an exceptional fledgling who had a great potential to move up the ranks. The movies he starred in appealed to the masses. His quintessential role as a hero who would beat villains to pulp brought applauses from all corners; his influence made fanbases sprout hither and thither.
Years passed, and his movies started to become repetitive and monotonous to the average movie critic. However, to his adorers, his movies still had the charm to captivate them. Grogu, knowing how his movies have become monotonous, wanted to try something new, and decided to act in a slow paced movie, going against his conventional Hero-Villain rivalry. In this movie, he was cast as a loser, who was beset by troubles, and would eventually perish out of his shortcomings. This movie was spectacular to the average movie critic, but to his devotees, it was awful. They rebuked the actor and threw tantrums. The movie was a box office disaster. He was affected financially and his image tainted.
A year later, he decided to make a comeback. With sheer reluctance, he decided to do the usual Hero-Villain movie. He could not act like he used to for he was unsure about doing the same type of role for the nth time. He was rebuffed by the critics for the pathetic script and awful acting. However, his ardent fans greeted their hero's comeback. The movie was a success in terms of revenue gains.
Grogu, with the success of the film, started pondering over his future. He wanted to experiment with different characters in the future, just like his counterparts. But then he thought about the impending backlash, the assaults on his dignity, and the subsequent downfall of his career. He has to choose between good films with poor reception, accompanied by danger, and ruin, or awful films with good reception, accompanied by fame, and money. He will forever be stuck in the Grogu Dilemma.
Modern day celebrities and social media influencers are victims of this dilemma. The notion that man is an independent being capable of making decisions on his free will is undermined when the decisions that he undertakes are fueled by an outside influence. These victims work and live as the whims of their supporters dictate. To be obedient to one’s fanbase is monetarily rewarding, but money is a facade. Being a slave to someone else's interests dilutes one's identity and hijacks one's craft.
